sisterhood

Join sister artists Cheryl, Charlene, and Susan Sward in the quaint coastal town of Charlestown Rhode Island for a week long art retreat. With a hand bound artist’s journal, plein air kit, and water-based media, we will explore the seashore and marshes, woodlands and farms, and a historical seaport village.

beachcombing

Creative use of watercolors, gouache, ink, and graphite pencils will be taught and utilized for rendering coastal, woodland, and urban scenes, as well as nature studies of fall leaves, shells and other specimens that we gather on our field trips.

painting

In the studio, students will receive nature illustration instruction in order to render our beach and woodland specimens in our art journals.

exploring

Little Rhody

As native Rhode Islanders, we’ll introduce you to the place we love! We’ll explore the seashore and saltwater marshes where we will use our plein air kits to sketch and paint. On other days, we will hike through the woods admiring the fall foliage and doing more plein air sketching and painting.

We’ll take a short trip to local farmlands as well as the historic fishing village of Wickford established in 1709. There we will set up our plein air kits for some urban sketching in ink and gouache.

Later in the week, we’ll travel up to Providence for more urban sketching, a tour of the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, the Providence Art Club, and Prospect Park.
