Ages 7 – 12

July 23-31 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM

This engaging summer art experience invites young artists and explorers to discover the beauty of the natural world. Led by natural science illustrator and retired public school teacher Susan Sward, students will explore the outdoors at North Kingstown Town Beach and its surrounding park.

Guided by curiosity, students will observe, collect, and examine natural specimens, then record their discoveries in personal art journals using pencil and watercolor pencils. Each day encourages close observation, creativity, and a deeper connection to nature.

Postcards from Home: Painting Local Landscapes in Gouache

5-Week Class

In this class, students will create a series of small-scale landscape paintings inspired by their own photographs of South County and surrounding areas. Working in a watercolor journal sized similarly to postcards, we’ll capture the essence of familiar places—beaches, farms, meadows, winding rivers, and local landmarks.

Students will learn how to simplify complex scenes, focus on strong composition, and translate photographic reference into expressive gouache paintings. Emphasis will be placed on color mixing, atmospheric perspective, and creating a sense of place through light, shape, and mark-making.

Each week, we’ll explore techniques for building small, cohesive studies that feel complete and intentional. By the end of the session, students will have a collection of painted “postcards” that reflect their personal connection to the local landscape.

This class is suitable for all levels. No prior experience with gouache is necessary.

Returning students welcome—new subjects and approaches will be introduced.
